Koi CBD Review

By Amie B.

Updated March 10, 2022

Koi CBD earned an overall score of 53% based on the scores earned in the following rating categories:

  • 70% in Trust and Transparency mainly due to making some false therapeutic claims.
  • 96% in Ingredients for doing a good job using natural ingredients, overall.
  • 25% in Lab Testing because the majority of testing is for research and development purposes, instead of testing the final product (what you actually use).
  • 20% in Product Safety, based on the problems with lab testing. High levels of residual solvents were detected in a few products.

Trust and Transparency

How straightforward and trustworthy is this company?

Although Koi CBD was told to stop making false therapeutic claims by the FDA in Nov. 2019 via a warning letter, it’s still going on, just not as bad (screenshot examples 1, 2).

There are product reviews on the Koi CBD website. Despite being in business since 2015, there are no reviews for Koi CBD on Trustpilot, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) doesn’t have a record of that company name.

There’s a 30-day satisfaction money back guarantee but only if the product is at least 50% full. Refunds are only accepted for products purchased directly from Koi CBD. Exchanges are possible if you bought it from another retailer and have the receipt (must be at least 50% full).

Prices are average at roughly $0.09 per milligram of CBD (what should it cost?).

Ingredients

Are they natural and high-quality?

The tincture oil drop products come in two formulas:

  • Koi CBD “Naturals” are broad-spectrum (up to 0.1% THC).
  • Koi CBD “Complete” are full-spectrum (up to 0.3% THC).

The drops are sweetened with Stevia and available in various all-natural (except the strawberry) flavor options.

Some products are made with Koi’s PRIZM™ broad-spectrum CBD. Frankly, it seems like regular broad-spectrum to me.

The Pain Relief Gel and CBD Lotions contain artificial ingredients.

Koi CBD claims to use organic hemp, but without USDA certification, it’s impossible to verify.

Terpenes are added to the Koi CBD Complete tinctures. When I reached out to customer service asking if they were sourced from hemp or other plants, I got the runaround (screenshot) and was told they couldn’t tell me because it’s “proprietary.” I’m nearly certain that these terpenes are not from hemp or they would have given me a straightforward answer.

Lab Testing

Is there Certificate of Analysis (COA) lab testing?

It positive that Koi CBD chooses to have labs results reported in the most transparent way possible (screenshot of why it matters).

As mentioned, a lot of the lab testing is for research and development purposes, instead of for the products actually being sold. This is especially concerning given that these aren’t new, or even “newish,” products (example 1, 2).

Product Safety

What are the results of the COA lab testing?

Koi CBD claims (screenshot) to use CO2 (natural compressed gas) for extraction (pulling CBD from the hemp plant). However, lab testing indicates that this is baseless because a variety of solvents were detected. The only time a residual solvent will be detected is if it was used for, or as part of, the extraction process.

For example, in the Pain Relief Roll-On, testing detected the residual solvent Ethanol at 157,513 (the limit to pass is 5,000 – yikes!) and trace amounts of Acetonitrile and Ethyl Acetate (screenshot)

Best Product Options

CBD Truth Finder can’t recommend products from unranked companies and I’m in no way affiliated with Koi CBD. That being said, I’ve found the following to be their best CBD oil products (what this is based on):

  • Koi CBD Naturals Oil Drops (broad-spectrum) come in 11 flavors and two concentrations (1,500mg and 3,000mg).
  • Koi CBD Complete Oil Drops (full-spectrum) come in 3 flavors and two concentrations (1,000mg and 3,000mg).
  • The CBD Balm is made with the Koi broad-spectrum PRIZM™ CBD along with a variety of other oils including ginger root, eucalyptus, and peppermint.
  • It comes in concentrations of 150mg (travel size), 500mg, and 1,000mg.
