Overview
Overall Score
This is based on the average number of points earned in the categories of Trust and Transparency, Ingredients, Lab Testing, and Product Safety.
Pros
Cons
Trust and Transparency
How straightforward and trustworthy is this brand?
- The satisfaction guarantee is misleading. There's a badge all over the website that implies there's a generous 60-day return policy. However, the fine print says it's only for unopened and unused products or those with, "a reasonable amount of the unused product".
- Unfortunately, despite being one of the largest CBD companies in the country, CBDfx doesn't have any sort of assistance program.
Ingredients
Are the ingredients natural and free from potential side effects?
- The ingredients are natural except for a few of the topicals.
- Although the gummies are brightly colored, it's all-natural (along with the flavoring).
- Unfortunately, the majority of products have additional added active ingredients, besides CBD (e.g. mushrooms). Most of what's added is considered to be supplements by the FDA. The FDA cautions that supplements often have the potential for side effects, they may interact with medications or cause problems with certain medical conditions. (These concerns don't apply to topical CBD because it doesn't enter the bloodstream.)
- In particular, none of the oil drop tincture products have any less than two additives.
- However, the full-spectrum CBD Capsule Softgels and Mixed Berry Gummies don't contain anything unnecessary.
- Many products have large amounts of added minor cannabinoids (cannabinoids not CBD) such as CBN and CBG. Please note that naturally occurring minor cannabinoids in the hemp plant are usually very low, or in trace amounts. More isn't always better.
- The terpene complex that's added to most products doesn't come from hemp and is sourced from other plants.
- The hemp is supposedly organic but without USDA certification, this claim is impossible to verify.
- None of the products are USDA-certified organic although it says they're organic on the website.
- Although pet CBD isn't part of my review, I'd suggest steering clear of the pet CBD Balm since there's no way to accurately dose this.
- I suggest avoiding all CBD vape products, mainly because it's almost impossible to accurately dose.
Lab Testing
Is there Certificate of Analysis (COA) lab testing for quality and safety?
- Consumers can verify the lab testing via QR codes. This is important because so many CBD companies forge lab results. Fortunately, that's not a concern with CBDfx.
- They report the lab testing results in the most transparent way possible. Consumers can always tell exactly what's in CBDFx CBD. Two thumbs up!
- The lab testing results are up-to-date and easy to find.
Product Safety
What are the results of the lab testing?
- They do a really good job of keeping contaminants out of products.
- The score isn't higher mainly due to the issue with the lab testing for the gummies (without being verifiably valid, I couldn't reference those results for evaluation in this category).
- CBDfx claims to use CO2 (natural compressed gas) instead of solvents to extract CBD from the hemp plants. However, lab testing detected a trace amount of the solvent Acentonitrile (see screenshot) and n-Pentane (see screenshot). In another product, Ethanol was detected at 340 (5,000 is the limit to pass)(see screenshot). The one and only way any residual solvent would be detected (even in trace amounts) is if solvents are used as, or as part of, the extraction process.
